Ray Martin-Wells Resigns
Published 24 May 2018
Ray Martin-Wells, leader of the Conservative Group resigned at tonight's council meeting. Former Councilor Wells had the notable distinction of being part of what we believe to be the only Conservative-Labour coalition since the second world war.
To ensure this coalition worked Wells was elected by the Labour Group to the position of Chair of The Audit and Governance Committee. That committees role is to monitor and report on the activities of the Labour controlled council, providing the checks and balances required in a democratic organization. It is understood that the Labour group considered his performance in this role as adequate.
In return all three members of the conservative group,(Ray Martin-Wells, Brenda Loynes and George Morris) were given positions on the Planning Committee. While his Register of Interests gives less than the expected minimum information on trade or profession, Wells has been noted to mentioned his interest in property development. This may also explain his exceptional diligence in managing to attend all but one of the Planning Committees meetings.
His replacement as Chair of the Audit and Governance Committee is Councilor Brenda Loynes. Only time will tell how the Labour group will rate her performance.
