FULL STEAM AHEAD

There's something very atmospheric about traction engine's and steam rallies. Something which attracts people from all walks of life - from families simply looking for a great day out in the open air, to the more knowledgeable (dare I say geeky) who take the subject very seriously indeed and know all the technicalities surrounding tractors, stationary engines, etc..
These events take place all over the country, mainly in the summer months. One of the most scenic venues hosted the recent Whitby rally - in the lee of the ancient abbey itself. I don't know what the shades of past monastics would make of the massive funfair which was a mecca for children, but I'm sure that the steam-powered carousel would have raised a gentle smile of indulgence.
Not only are there mechanical displays of the aforementioned tractors and stationary engines on show however - there are also classic cars and bicycles on display, plus arena events (which may include anything from falconry to fire-eating) and, of course, the ubiquitous trade stands/market. For me, however, the beautifully painted steam engines with their gleaming, polished metalwork are the stars, and their boiler-suited, oil-covered owners are justifiably proud of them.
Fancy a visit? Up and coming events are the Yorkshire rally (at Malton) on the 1st and 2nd of September 2018 and one at Hunton (near Bedale) on the 8th and 9th of the same month. Well worth a look!
